PlantQuill · About Us

Written by people who’ve actually kept the plant alive

PlantQuill started because most plant advice online is either copied from somewhere else or written for greenhouses, not apartments. Everything we publish is written or checked by someone who grows the plant themselves — including the pothos that’s currently judging us from the kitchen window.

Sarah Mitchell

Founder & Horticulturist

Sarah’s first apartment had six dead plants in under a year before she admitted the pots, not her thumb, were the problem. She got certified as a Professional Horticulturist not long after, then spent eleven years on nursery floors before starting PlantQuill. Her apartment holds somewhere around 40 plants now, and she still can’t keep a fiddle leaf fig alive past one season, which is why this site doesn’t call that species “easy” just because everyone else does.

James Okafor

Soil & Pest Specialist

Before PlantQuill, James ran pest and soil programs at a regional nursery for eight years. Most of what he actually knows came from customers walking in holding a sad, spotted leaf with no idea what caused it. He tests every treatment on his own plants before he writes about it, mostly because he’s been confidently wrong before and would rather find that out at home.

Priya Nandakumar

Indoor Growing Editor

Priya’s balcony faces north, which nursery staff have told her more than once is close to a death sentence for anything edible. She’s grown herbs, chilies, and a stubborn dwarf lime there for six years anyway. Last winter she lost an entire pepper plant to spider mites because she ignored the early signs. That mistake is now its own guide on the site.

Emma Torres

Content Editor & Plant Tester

Emma reads every guide before it’s published and tries the instructions herself first, usually on a fiddle leaf fig with strong opinions about being moved. If a step reads fine but doesn’t actually work in her apartment, it gets rewritten before it goes live. She’s also the reason older posts get corrected instead of just sitting there being wrong for years.

How we keep our advice honest

We grow the plants we write about

Every guide is based on a plant one of us actually has, not just something we read about somewhere else.

Old posts get rechecked

Watering and light advice changes with the seasons, so we go back and fix posts that no longer hold up.

We tell you when it’s not settled

Sometimes a plant behaves differently depending on your home. When that’s true, we say so instead of picking one answer.
